Field Archery

This is a compact field archery course set in the beautiful Gower countryside overlooking the iconic saltmarsh of the Loughor Estuary. Like most field archery courses, completing a round can be quite strenuous and at times slippery. We rate the course as being of medium difficulty. This means that you will be shooting at the full range of distances with few hazards and only one steep uphill shot.

This is a permanent course with the emphasis being on developing field archery skills through practice and varied targets. Targets and “marked” shooting pegs are permanently set out. This means that you can arrive, uncover a few target faces and shoot. Some members prefer to shoot a scored round and we have scorecards available. For club competitions we alter the shooting pegs providing for an unmarked round followed by a marked round.

The Field Course

Types of Bow

We shoot barebow, longbow, recurve and traditional bows. The course is suitable for compound but only a few targets have back-stop netting. Some of the targets are a little soft.

What Faces Do You Use?

We usually only shoot at the black roundel faces with a golden centre. If members wish to shoot at animal faces then this can be arranged. We don’t have any 3D targets.

The Course

The course is set out with 12 targets, set in woodland, open fields, with shooting pegs at the top of a rocky crag and a shooting lane across an old lime kiln. We have three practice bosses at 30 metres and a further target with pegs set out at 10 metre intervals up to 60 metres for getting sight marks and practice.

Who Can Shoot

The course is open to members of any Archery GB club as we are set up and licensed to shoot by Archery GB. Archers who have not previously shot field archery must complete a familiarisation course.

Learning To Shoot Field Archery
From time to time we will arrange taster sessions and familiarisation courses for established archers.

The club has some experienced field archers who are willing to share their knowledge. If pressed they will tell you of their achievements, but bring your own chair, you are in for the long haul.

All Abilities

Field archery is the most strenuous form of archery as it involves moving around the course. The targets are set out on rough ground and shooting may be uphill, downhill or across the slope of a hill. We have set out the field course with a view to encouraging archers with a disability but some mobility to have the experience of field archery. We hope that at least six of the targets are accessible to all abilities including two downhill shots where a helping hand may be needed to retrieve arrows.
